Abstract
The Indonesian workforce condition is facing serious challenges, in particular, lower education level and poor professionalism, leading to insufficient technical skill, poor working ethics, and weak environment awareness. Vocational education seems to become a strategic solution to bring about ready-to-go work forces despite the lower society participation. On this account, being the oldest Islamic college, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) plays an important role in bringing its graduates not only technically competent but also morally excellent, through Applied Bachelor (AB) program. Integrating Islam Education (IE) on the basis of raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn, UII has committed to passing professional, integrity, and having-social-responsibility graduates. The IE at AB UII, however, needs revitalization and adjustment to vocation student character. Hence, this study aims to (1) examine the strategy of Islam Education at AB program in UII, (2) analyze the implementation of IE at AB program in UII, and (3) construct IE on the basis of, raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn which suits AB students’ need, so that they can be distinguished industry practitioners whose moral and professional attitudes are excellent in this global world. This study employed qualitative approach with field research type which aimed to do in-depth excavation of the, raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn -based IE construct at AB program in UII. The study applied a phenomenology approach to get an understanding of what religious experience means to students, lecturers, and other academicians in the process of education and guidance of Islam which is, raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn. The scholar serves as the key instrument and analyzes the data inductively by enriching herself with theoretical frames taken from Al-Qur’an, Hadith, ulama’s view, and an official perspective of the Ministry of Religion Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia on, raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn concept which is integrated with professional-attitude building. Research subjects were selected purposively comprising AB students of 2022/2023 and of 2023/2024, lecturers, the study program management, head of the integrated lectures, head of the Center for Islamic Studies (CIS), Planning and Development Body (PDB), industry partners and alumni. Data were collected through participative observation technic, institutional document review, and unstructured in-depth interview. Miles, Huberman, and Saldana analysis model was applied with the following continuous stages: data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. Data were validated applied triangulation on the sources, method, and theory to ascertain the validity and credibility of the discoveries of the study. The results show the followings. (1) The IE strategy at AB Program of UII has been designed comprehensively under curricula, co-curricula, and extra curricula approach to shape religious, humanistic students who will expectedly be contributive to the world of industry. (2) The IE implementation, despite having reached the national standard and blended the Islamic values into the study program curriculum, is facing another challenge when synergizing among lecturers and contextualizing materials against vacation students’ need. (3) IE model on the basis of raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn is built onto two primary foundations (i.e. theology and philosophy). The former refers to Al-Qur’an and Hadith, while the later involves five fundamental pillars: the philosophy of monotheism, humanity, inclusivity, social transformation, and prophetic ethics. These foundations leads to, raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn vision and IE objectives which emphasize on building the students’ religious, inclusive, and transformative character. This kind of implementation is fusing the roles of educators, curriculum, and pupils through deep learning which involves meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning. The strategies include case study, role playing, and social humanity performance and end in evaluation and reflection. The final result is a shift of the students’ behavior as industry practitioners who bring values of rahmatn li al’alamin at work and in social life with them. The theoretical implication will be reflective, critical, and ethical industry practitioners, as a result of IE on the basis of raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn, who are adaptive to industrial need and time. This learning does not only emphasize on textual religion understanding, but it also strengthen the students; character and spirituality with which IE paradigm transformation from dogmatic-informational approach to transformative and applicable learning occurs. The shift helps professional individuals – who do not only have technical competence, but also good deed and social responsibility – to emerge.
