Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of teacher professionalism, especially Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers, in supporting the successful implementation of the Independent Curriculum at SMP Negeri 1 Bantul. The Independent Curriculum demands an active and creative role for teachers in designing and implementing effective, innovative, and student-oriented learning. However, the results of initial observations showed that the level of teacher professionalism was still low, especially in mastering learning strategies and utilizing learning media, which resulted in a lack of attractiveness in the teaching and learning process. This study aims to examine in-depth how Islamic Religious Education (ISE) teachers develop their professionalism in facing the demands of the Independent Curriculum and to uncover the challenges they face in integrating religious values into student-centered learning, enabling teachers to implement learning that is relevant to Islamic values and in accordance with the principles of the Independent Curriculum. This study employed a qualitative approach with field research. The subjects consisted of five individuals: the principal, the vice principal in charge of curriculum, and three Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Bantul. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis employed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, which includes data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. Results: The study indicates that the implementation of the Independent Curriculum at SMP Negeri 1 Bantul has progressed gradually, emphasizing student-centered learning and character building. The professionalism of Islamic Religious Education teachers is developed through a sustainable and collaborative approach to enhance pedagogical and professional capacity. However, teachers still face various challenges, particularly in implementing differentiated learning, integrating religious values into project approaches, and limited supporting resources.
