Abstract
Character education is an urgent need in shaping children's morals and personalities, especially for children from vulnerable social backgrounds such as those at the Yogyakarta Social Rehabilitation and Child Care Center (BRSPA). These children face various emotional and social problems due to experiences of violence, neglect, and family dysfunction, requiring an educational approach tailored to their circumstances. This situation poses a major challenge in character development, particularly in the emotional, social, and spiritual aspects. To address this, BRSPA implements character education through religious activities designed systematically and contextually, with the aim of instilling moral and spiritual values such as religiosity, honesty, responsibility, discipline, independence, and others. This study aims to analyze the design and strategies of character education through religious activities at BRSPA Yogyakarta and to review the challenges/obstacles faced in the development process. The research findings indicate that religious activities at BRSPA Yogyakarta, such as congregational prayers, as well as spiritual guidance through TPA, Gemaji, and PHBI, effectively strengthen values such as religiosity, honesty, discipline, independence, responsibility, and others. Theoretically, this approach is in line with Thomas Lickona, who emphasizes the importance of moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action, so that children not only understand moral teachings but also internalize them and practice them in their daily lives. The method used is qualitative with a case study approach to gain a deep understanding of religious activities in shaping the character of foster children. Data was collected through interviews, observations, and documentation from the research subjects, namely foster children, the head of the center, social workers, and caregivers, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, while data validity was tested through source and method triangulation. The character education design through religious activities at BRSPA Yogyakarta is structured based on the needs of the children and guidelines from the Social Affairs Department, as well as an activity calendar with a Religious Program Plan that instills values such as religiosity, honesty, discipline, responsibility, independence, creativity, curiosity, communication, and environmental awareness. These values are implemented through daily, weekly, and special religious activities using strategies such as modeling, habit formation, advice, attention, and punishment as means of guidance.
