Abstract
This study aims to analyze the strategies of religious moderation education at Madrasah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta and to examine its relevance to the concept of Risalah Islam Berkemajuan promoted by Muhammadiyah’s Central Board. The research background stems from the reality of growing extremism and intolerance threatening national harmony, thus requiring the strengthening of religious moderation through formal pesantren-based education. Established in 1918, Madrasah Mu’allimin, as Muhammadiyah’s cadre-forming institution, plays a strategic role in instilling the values of religious moderation aligned with the vision of Progressive Islam. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, involving school leaders, teachers, dormitory supervisors, student activity managers, and students as informants. Data analysis was conducted through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with verification using source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings reveal that the strategies of religious moderation education at Mu’allimin are implemented through the integration of moderation values into the formal curriculum (religious and general subjects), dormitory life, extracurricular activities, and cadre programs such as Mubaligh Hijrah and community service. The moderation values practiced include national commitment, tolerance, non-violence, and respect for local wisdom. These findings demonstrate significant alignment with the principles of Muhammadiyah’s Risalah Islam Berkemajuan, which emphasizes a moderate, rational, inclusive, adaptive, and universally beneficial interpretation of Islam. This study concludes that religious moderation education at Madrasah Mu’allimin is not only relevant but also represents a concrete manifestation of Risalah Islam Berkemajuan at the secondary pesantren education level. Recommendations are directed toward strengthening the moderation curriculum, enhancing educators’ capacity, and replicating this educational model in other Muhammadiyah institutions to reinforce the foundation of moderation in society.
