Abstract

The high level of labor migration in Ledokombo, Jember Regency causes the emergence of “social orphanhood” phenomenon that requires alternative parenting models. The academic problem underlying this research is the limitation of individualistic and hierarchical parenting models in responding to child-rearing challenges in high-migration areas. Children of migrant workers need substitute caregivers to facilitate identity development, academic support, and communication mediation with migrating parents. This problem requires the construction of alternative educational models capable of integrating local wisdom with contemporary collaborative parenting needs. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a hermeneutic-phenomenological perspective to reveal the essence of collaborative parenting experiences in Ledokombo. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews with various parenting actors (children, parents, caregivers at Sekolah Bok-ebok, Sekolah Pak-bapak, Sekolah Eyang, and Tanoker Community), participant observation in gotong royong parenting practices, and analysis of policy documentation and learning modules. Data analysis was conducted through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, applying source and method triangulation to ensure validity of findings. The research produces main findings of gotong royong parenting which includes findings such as: 1) structural adaptation of parenting systems 2) transnational parenting 3) community resilience 4) cultural innovation and 5) theoretical construction of alternative meaningful-rhizome education that integrates rhizomatic concepts (horizontal networks and interconnectivity) with meaningful learning. This theory shows that collaborative parenting in Ledokombo manifests in gotong royong practices involving redistribution of parenting responsibilities to various community elements. Findings show that children develop resilience and positive identity through multi-figure caregiver support that facilitates reciprocal care and formation of communal educational capital.
