Abstract
The phenomenon of increasing fatherlessness reinforces the urgency of studying the contribution of fathers in the process of self-actualisation among young adults. This study aims to describe how the role of fathers in their lives and to examine the contribution of fathers' roles to the development of students' self-actualisation. This study argues that fathers' involvement, which integrates Erikson's psychosocial theory, Bowlby's secure base and safe haven functions from Attachment Theory, with the dimensions of engagement, accessibility, and responsibility from Lamb's Paternal Involvement Model, can map the trajectory of fathers' involvement, from emotional support and value guidance to decision-making practices among students, and act as a holistic agent that bridges empirical and theoretical gaps while facilitating the formation of psychosocial identity, academic resilience, and long-term goal orientation, which are crucial in the process of self-actualisation among students. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with a phenomenological-psychological approach. Nine participants were selected using purposive sampling from among unmarried students in the Faculty of Science and Technology and Social Sciences and Humanities. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, while secondary data was obtained through relevant scientific documentation. The data obtained was analysed using the model developed by Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and thematic conclusion drawing and verification. The research findings revealed three main forms of fatherly contribution: First, emotional support that fosters secure attachment. Second, cognitive-strategic guidance that encourages independent decision-making. And third, transformative role modelling that instils religious values, discipline, and responsibility. The integration of these three dimensions facilitates the development of self-confidence, academic resilience, and future orientation. Conversely, limited father involvement in financial aspects risks creating an affective gap. These findings underscore the importance of fathers' holistic role in shaping young adults' psychosocial identity and enrich research in the fields of humanistic psychology and contemporary parenting.
