Abstract

This study is grounded in a critical reflection on the dominance of Western psychological theories, which largely emerged within industrialized and individualistic societies. Mainstream psychological frameworks often neglect cultural contexts as legitimate sources of behavioral regulation. It is within this epistemological gap that the urgency of indigenous psychology arises—advocating for local cultures, with their embedded values, practices, and symbolisms, to serve as valid foundations for understanding the dynamics of the human psyche and behavior. The aim of this research is to explore the philosophical meaning of Urip Iku Urup and to examine how this value informs prosocial behavior within the framework of indigenous psychology. The research questions are as follows: (1) What is the philosophical meaning of Urip Iku Urup? (2) How does this value shape human behavior? (3) How can the concept of Urip Iku Urup be interpreted through the lens of indigenous psychology?. Through cultural value analysis, the study identifies motivational, cognitive, and affective components. From the lens of symbolic interactionism, the meaning of urup is born, understood, and internalized through symbolic exchanges in social interactions, which in turn shape behavioral expressions. Within indigenous psychology, the proverb functions as both a normative and motivational pillar, explaining why and how community members consistently exhibit altruism and solidarity. Urip Iku Urup serves as a cultural schema that links individual life meaning with social contribution, while also acting as a normative and motivational foundation for altruistic attitudes, a sense of fulfillment (marem), and collective solidarity. Employing a qualitative approach and triangulation techniques—including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis—this research involves Sedekah Rombongan volunteers, academics, and Javanese cultural experts as primary participants. The findings reveal that Urip Iku Urup operates as a normative-affective framework that encourages prosocial actions such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), social concern, and self-sacrifice. It is transmitted transgenerationally through family, social practices, and religious teachings. Far from being merely a philosophical saying, Urip Iku Urup represents a contextual psychological framework that offers a relevant alternative for the development of indigenous psychology and serves as a foundation for the collective well-being of Indonesian society.
