Abstract
In the past decade, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as a promising solution to the limitations of traditional networks. SDN architecture introduces a centralized controller as a new network component capable of managing and programming the network efficiently while reducing complexity. However, SDN faces significant security vulnerabilities, particularly targeting the controller. Attacks on the controller can compromise the entire network, leaving this issue open for further investigation. Meanwhile, implementing Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) can affect overall network performance. The diversity of SDN controllers also raises ambiguity in selecting the most appropriate solution. This research proposes integrating an Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS) into SDN using two widely supported controllers, Open Network Operating System (ONOS) and Open DayLight (ODL), and comparing their performance and security. The applied IDPS successfully mitigates Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, effectively blocking malicious traffic. Quality of Service (QoS) measurements on ONOS show a throughput of 24.46 Mbps, a delay of 0.5 ms, a packet loss of 1.19%, and a jitter of 0,0000024 ms. QoS measurements on ODL indicate a throughput of 36.71 Mbps, a delay of 0.46 ms, a packet loss of 0.46%, and a jitter of 0,0000017 ms.
