Abstract
In the Mandailing custom, Tuor is a traditional dowry that is significant in the wedding procession and is imbued with symbolic meaning. However, the dynamics of modernization and urbanization have led to new interpretations of the term, specifically among the younger generation, who tend to adapt traditional values to the demands of modern life. This research was motivated by the current absence of studies that have examined the interpretation of the Tuor tradition by the younger generation of Mandailing, especially those who have migrated from their place of origin. The objective of this study is to identify and describe the understanding and factors that influence the interpretation of Tuor by the younger generation of Muslim Mandailing in Yogyakarta. This research employs a sociological-anthropological approach, utilizing a descriptive-analytical field research method. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with eight informants who were purposely selected based on the criteria of being aged 20–35 years old, of Mandailing ethnicity, and having lived in Yogyakarta for at least two years. Documentation and literature studies were used to support the findings. Qualitative data analysis was conducted inductively, drawing on Max Weber's theory of social action, which is particularly relevant for examining how traditional, value-rational, and instrumental-rational actions shape the meaning of Tuor within the context of diaspora life and modernity. The results revealed several distinct understandings of Tuor among the younger generation of Mandailing in Yogyakarta in the context of marriage. Some specifically equate Tuor with mahar syar'i (Islamic dowry), while the majority view Tuor as a separate social and symbolic obligation. Despite these distinctions, all groups interpret Tuor as a form of respect for women and their families, as evidence of men's commitment to marriage, and as a means to strengthen both kinship bonds and Mandailing cultural identity. Factors, including family background, education, economic conditions, and multicultural social interactions, influence the understanding of Tuor. These findings significantly contribute to both cultural and religious studies and support efforts to preserve the evolving Mandailing tradition. Further research is recommended to compare Tuor’s meanings in other diaspora communities, which would help broaden the perspective.
