Abstract

This research focuses on the teaching of the uses of verb and tense for the first-year students at MAN Yogyakarta 1. The study aims to identify the methods applied by the English teacher, the obstacles encountered in the teaching and learning process, the strategies employed to overcome these obstacles, and the students’ mastery in using English verbs and tenses. The research applies both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative method is used to analyze descriptive, non-statistical data objectively, while the quantitative method is applied to analyze statistical data from the students’ try-out results. The findings reveal that the teacher uses eclectic and pattern-practice methods, both of which are sufficiently effective as reflected in the students’ average score of 64.92, categorized as sufficient achievement. Several obstacles hinder the learning process, such as limited textbooks, overcrowded classes, insufficient facilities, lack of teaching aids, and limited time. To address these, the headmaster increased learning resources and facilities, while the teacher motivated students, corrected their work in class, and provided additional exercises. The study concludes that the teaching methods and the teacher’s experience play an important role in improving learning outcomes, and the hypothesis that better knowledge and teaching practices lead to better results is supported.
