Abstract
The development of digital technology has changed the interaction patterns of children, especially Generation Alpha, known as digital native. UNICEF data shows that young children spend an average of 3-4 hours per day in front of screens, exceeding the WHO recommended limit, which has the potential to affect disciplinary development. Various studies have discussed the influence of devices on children's behavior, but specific studies focusing on parents' efforts to minimize the negative impact on the discipline of 5-6 year-old children in rural areas are still limited. This study aims to (1) determine the impact of gadget use on the discipline of children aged 5-6 years, (2) determine parental efforts to minimize the negative impact of gadget use on children's discipline, and (3) determine the supporting and inhibiting factors of parents in efforts to minimize the impact of gadget use on the discipline of children aged 5-6 years. The research method used a qualitative case study approach. The research subjects were four parents of children aged 5-6 years in Sleman Regency. Data collection techniques used observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using coding techniques, which included the stages of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The results show that gadget use has positive impacts, such as increasing creativity and access to information, but also has negative impacts on children's discipline, including decreased compliance with rules, reduced focus, and increased dependence on gadgets. Parental efforts include setting a usage schedule, direct supervision, the application of positive and negative reinforcement according to Skinner's theory, and the habituation of authoritative parenting styles ala Baumrind. Supporting factors include parental awareness and environmental support, while inhibiting factors are parental busyness and inconsistent supervision. These findings emphasize the crucial role of parents in shaping children's discipline in the digital age. The practical implication of this study is the need for guidance for parents in managing healthy device use in children aged 5–6 years. Theoretically, this study enriches the literature on the application of authoritative parenting styles in the context of digital parenting, particularly in rural areas.
