Abstract

This research provides an in-depth analysis of the Sufi aesthetics of Maulana Jalāluddīn Rūmī (d. 1273 AD) as presented in his work, Fihi Ma Fihi. The study is focused on the dialectic between the experience of spiritual beauty and its manifestation in language. The primary objective is to identify how Rumi constructs beauty as a form of spiritual knowledge (ma'rifah) and how he employs metaphor and symbolism to articulate these transcendent experiences. Rumi constructs Sufi aesthetics as an inner experience, where worldly beauty is understood as a tajallī (manifestation) of Divine Beauty (Jamaal Allah). The epistemological foundation of beauty, for Rumi, does not solely rely on sensory perception or rational thought, but rather on a spiritual intuition (dzawq) achieved through the Sufi journey. The pinnacle of beauty for humanity, in Rumi's view, is the experience of fanā’ (annihilation of the self) within the Divine Beauty, followed by baqā’ (subsistence in God). Rumi's unique methodology, which involves using language rich in metaphor and symbolism, serves as a tool to guide readers from a literal understanding to an inner, deeper meaning, thus compensating for the limitations of intellect and verbal language. Furthermore, Rumi identifies the primary obstacles to this spiritual aesthetic experience as ghaflah (heedlessness) and attachment to the material world. He considers heedlessness to be the main barrier preventing humans from witnessing true beauty. Attachment to fleeting physical beauty, without recognizing its Divine source, leads to spiritual delusion and confusion. To counter this, Rumi proposes the strengthening of isyq (divine love) and consistent spiritual practice as a methodology. This research highlights the relevance of Rumi's aesthetic philosophy in addressing contemporary challenges, offering insights for the strengthening of spirituality and aesthetic sensitivity in the modern era.
