Abstract

Film is a mass media that not only serves as entertainment but also often presents complex moral issues and ethical dilemmas. The film A Man Called Otto (2022) portrays the story of an elderly man facing various inner conflicts and moral dilemmas after losing his beloved wife. This film offers a narrative about life struggles, social responsibility, and moral values that can be reflected upon by the audience. Therefore, the analysis of the deontological ethical dimension in this film is important to understand how duty-based moral principles are reflected in the behavior of the main character and the storyline. The research questions in this study are, first, what moral issues emerge in the film A Man Called Otto? Second, how can the film be analyzed from the perspective of Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics? The purpose of this research is to analyze the moral issues contained in the film as well as to examine the deontological ethical values that arise in the character interactions and story development. This study aims to contribute to the field of ethics in film as a medium for reflecting on moral life. The research method used is qualitative with a library research approach. The researcher collects data from the film as the material object and Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethical theory as the formal object. Data collection techniques include documentation and non-participant observation, followed by descriptive-qualitative analysis to explain and analyze the moral actions and values reflected in the film according to the deontological ethical framework. The results of the study show that the main character in the film, Otto Anderson, responds to his moral dilemmas by upholding the principle of moral duty as taught in Kant’s deontological ethics. The film contains universal moral values such as respect for human dignity, integrity, and commitment to duty regardless of personal consequences. Otto demonstrates consistent attitudes and actions based on moral obligations. This film not only depicts inner struggles but also teaches the importance of sincerely fulfilling moral duties to build a just and dignified society.
