Abstract
The debate between myth and logos since the 6th century BC has yet to find a definitive resolution. Myth is understood as speculative symbolic narrative, while logos is understood as rational argument in understanding reality. Bottici, Eliade, and Vernant emphasize that the relationship between the two is not merely one of opposition, but rather an ongoing dialogue and transformation. Such phenomena can be observed in the Minangkabau society, which continues to preserve myths such as inyiak balang, urang bunian, and antu aru-aru through collective memory in the form of pantun, mantras, songs, and silat movements. Human interaction with myths often leads to conflicts, especially when humans enter the forest without permission and alter its function. To resolve conflicts between humans and myths, agreements are made in the form of symbols that carry logical messages or meanings. This research aims to understand the tangible and intangible functions of myths found in rimbo larangan in Minangkabau and explain the harmonious relationship between humans and nature through myths found in rimbo larangan in Minangkabau. The research method used is qualitative, with the type of field research. The data collection technique used is triangulation technique, which combines observation, interview, and document study techniques in collecting data. The data is processed through three stages; data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using Levi Strauss' structuralism theory. The results showed that; First, the harmonious relationship created between humans and nature through the mythology of rimbo larangan has provided benefits or functions for humans, the functions in question can be categorized into two categories, namely tangible functions and intangible functions. Tangible functions include cultural, ecological, and social control functions, while intangible functions include the function of abstraction of the supernatural and the function of protection of the philosophy of alam takambang jadi guru. Second, myths as a way of thinking have given rise to a harmonious relationship between humans and nature, as well as human ethics towards nature. The harmonious relationship between humans and nature can be seen in the division of forest areas into rimbo and parak, agreements and traditions, symbols and prohibitions, and the bestowal of titles of respect upon tigers. Meanwhile, human ethics toward nature take the form of settlement ethics, communication ethics, and livestock and gardening ethics.
