Abstract

This study aimed at (1) designing a handout on biology teaching based on character education for Senior High School Students grade X based on the standard of content, (2) exploring the characteristics of biology handout as teaching materials that have been developed, and (3) understanding the quality of learning using the handout in the subject matter of environmental pollution grade X. This study employed the research & development (Research and Development) with ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Assessment instrument were used to look at the quality questionnaires covering several aspects of the depth of concepts, language, character education, appearance, and implementation, and evaluation. The handout quality was reviewed and layout by (two expert media, one biology expert, and 5 peer reviewers) and reviewer II (2 teachers and 15 students in biology class X MAN Maguwoharjo Yogyakarta through limited testing). Data quality value obtained in the form of qualitative data were transformed into quantitative data. Quantitative data were analyzed by every aspect of the assessment. After the score obtained, then it was converted to qualitative determinant based on guidelines criteria for ideal rating category. The research has successfully developed a handout of biology education that contained characters education, the handout covered the following characterisistics: column-character bio, bio-info, pictures, articles, and training, which were prepared using ADDIE research design. Results of the assessment by material experts scored 89.01% with very good category (SB), media expert assessment scored 89.72% with very good category (SB), assessment peer reviewers scored 85.46% with very good category ( SB), a teacher of biology scored 74.45% with good category (B), and assessment of students MAN Maguwoharjo Yogyakarta scored 96.79% with very good category (SB). Based on that assessment, the handout has a good quality. Keywords: handouts, character education, environmental pollution, content standards
