Abstract

Blambangan's resistance to Mataram expansion in the period 1638-1691 AD was an important episode in the history of the archipelago which reflected the dynamics of power in the Java and Bali regions. Blambangan, which at that time was a kingdom at the eastern tip of Java, faced threats from the Mataram Kingdom, which had ambitions to expand its influence and power. During this period, Blambangan attempted to maintain its sovereignty through various strategies, including military resistance and diplomatic negotiations. Nevertheless, Mataram's greater military strength and resources as well as support from its allies put Blambangan in a difficult position. Ultimately, the Blambangan resistance declined after decades of conflict, leading to a decline in local power and the integration of the region into Mataram influence. This research examines the factors that influence the dynamics of the Blambangan resistance, including the role of local leadership, military strategy, and the influence of external forces. In addition, the social, economic and political impacts of Mataram's expansion on Blambangan are also analyzed to understand the long-term implications of this conflict. This study uses a socio-political approach, while the theory used is resistance theory according to James C. Scott. The research method used is the historical research method which consists of several stages, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation and historiography. The research results show that although the Blambangan resistance ultimately failed to stop Mataram expansion, it played an important role in shaping regional history and provides insight into the interactions between local and expansive forces in the archipelago in the 17th century.
