Abstract

This research is based on the importance of reading abilities and skills. Reading activities have a crucial role in forming an innovative, critical and intelligent generation. Therefore, reading abilities and skills are a necessity that need to be emphasized and developed from an early age. However, there are still many people who consider reading only as a formal need. The low level of reading comprehension in Indonesia is largely caused by the influence of information technology such as gadgets. Improving children's reading comprehension can be done by using picture books as a learning tool. This research was intended to determine the effect of picture books on the reading comprehension ability of lower grade students at MI Maulana Maghribi Pundong. The method used in this research is quantitative with an associative descriptive approach. The variables of this research are the independent variable, namely the application of picture book media and the dependent variable, namely the ability to understand students' reading. The population in this study were lower class students at MI Maulana Maghribi Pundong. The research sample was students in class IIA and IIB with a total of 44 students. The research instrument used was a questionnaire which was distributed to class II students and carried out with assistance. The data analysis technique used is a simple linear regression test. Data analysis was carried out with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software. The results of data analysis show that the constant value (a) is 14.683 and the regression coefficient (b) is 0.536, which means it has a positive influence. The R Square value was also obtained, namely 0.115, which means that the effect of picture books on reading comprehension ability is 15.5%. So, it can be concluded that picture book media has a positive influence on the reading comprehension ability of lower grade students.
