Abstract

This research is entitled "Patriotism in the Poem "Hattaa al-Maut" by Samiih al- Qasim (Riffaterre's Semiotic Study)" this poem is about Palestine. In more depth the researcher discusses it with Riffaterre's Semiotic theory. Riffaterre uses two levels of reading, namely heuristic and hermeneutik reading. In heuristic reading, the meaning is still scattered and not comprehensive, so that it has not yet obtained a unity of meaning. The next step is hermeneutik reading to obtain a concentration of meaning. Hermeneutik reading by tracing potential hypograms to find models and analyze their variants, and determining the actual hypogram that underlies the creation of the poetry text. intertextual relationships that underlie the creation of his poetry. The results of this study reveal that in the heuristic reading, the meaning of the poem “Hattā al Maut” is still scattered, namely the meaning of torture, lamentation and enthusiasm in defending Palestine. Then the hermeneutic reading is continued so that a centralized meaning is obtained, resulting in a potential hypogram that shows the idea of the lyricist, a great man struggling to defend and expel the invaders from Palestine. The model in this poem is “Sobaḥu al-Khair yā Ummī”. This model is transformed into five variants spread across the verses of the poem. Then, the matrix “Defending and guarding the homeland until the end of life” is obtained. Furthermore, the intertextual relationship or actual hypogram that underlies the creation of this poem is obtained, first, the poem Ilā Ummī by Maḥmūd Darwīsh in the diwan 'Asyiq Min Falisṭīn and Q.S al-Maidah (5:21).
