Abstract

The country of Ethiopia faces the problem of the identity of Islam and Christianity. Ethiopia's Christian rulers rejected Muslims. According to their understanding, Christianity is the only true religion. As a result, Muslims often experience oppression, attacks and murder. The oppression experienced by muslims is that they are a minority group amidst the dominating Christians. This oppression of minority muslims is reflected in the novel Aẓ-Ẓill Al-Aswad by Najib Al Kailani. The researcher attempts to provide a concretization of the picture of minority muslim oppression based on Wolfgang Iser's reception aesthetics. Then the researcher critically interprets the struggle of minority Muslims through the tension in the structure of the novel text. Apart from that, researchers found blank spaces and filled them so that they found solutions to the oppression of muslim minorities. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The data source used is the novel Aẓ-Ẓill Al-Aswad by Najib Al Kailani. Researcher used collection methods which included listening and note-taking techniques. The analytical method that researcher use is hermeneutic. This research concludes that the depiction of oppression of muslim minorities in the novel includes: rivalry between two religions, religious exclusivism, politicization of religion, genocide against muslims, intimidation and feelings of hopelessness, religious exploitation and economic capitalization, oppressive religious exclusivism, and erasure of symbols. Islam. The struggle of minority muslims in facing oppression is that muslims are patiently waiting for the right time to occupy the highest position as emperor of Ethiopia, making policies to allow the construction of mosques, leaking information about attacks from enemies, dialogical efforts to calm social chaos, fighting with weapons, and being willing to make sacrifices for the sake of Islam. The novel text Aẓ-Ẓill Al-Aswad offers a solution to the oppression of minority Muslims with transformative religious ideas. This idea considers religion not only as a teaching of religious life but as capital or strength to make changes in a good direction. The power to make change requires the unity of the people. Apart from that, the idea of pluralism needs to be echoed in the hope that the doctrine of extreme fanaticism will be eliminated. Muslims need to instill a sense of solidarity so that they support and strengthen each other in the face of oppression. Then, minority muslims need to strengthen the values of Islamic religiosity and be loyal to leader.
