Abstract

Senandung art is one of the traditional arts that has undergone changes, although until now it is still preserved by the Malay community in Tanjungbalai city because it suits the needs of the surrounding community so that this is interesting to study. This study aims to determine changes in the art of Senandung in Tanjungbalai city. The core problems in this study are why changes occur in the art of Senandung in Tanjungbalai city and how the forms of change in the art of Senandung in Tanjungbalai city. To approach these problems, this research uses a cultural anthropology approach that refers to the theory of commodification by Vincent Mosco. Data collection techniques in this study used interview techniques and literature studies, while in the process of analyzing this research using qualitative sources along with other supporting sources. Furthermore, this research uses historical research methods consisting of 4 stages, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study show that there are several forms of change in the art of Senandung which include changes in presentation form, additional lyrics, and changes in function. At first, Senandung functioned as a ritual to summon the wind and at the same time as a place to pour out one's heart in various conditions. But after the change, Senandung functions as a means of entertainment, festivals and several other functions, these changes are inseparable from the needs of the surrounding community. This is the reason why the art of Senandung is considered important for the Malay community in Tanjungbalai city, because from the beginning of its appearance until the changes in this art are needed by the supporting community. The factors behind some of these changes are religious, cultural, economic and artist creativity factors.
