Abstract
The main problem in this study is the lack of in-depth research on the concept of targhib and tarhib motivation in the Qur’an that can serve as a foundation for work ethics in Islamic education. Thus far, discussions on motivation in education have largely referred to Western theories that are secular in nature and pay little attention to spiritual dimensions and divine values. This has led to Islamic education practices that tend to emphasize cognitive aspects and worldly achievements. Therefore, it is necessary to explore comprehensive Qur’anic motivational values to guide educators and students toward seeking the pleasure of Allah and maintaining a balance between hope (targhib) and fear (tarhib). The main problem addressed in this research is the lack of in-depth studies regarding the concept of targhib and tarhib motivation in the Qur’an that can serve as a work foundation in Islamic education. Until now, discussions on motivation in education have mostly referred to Western theories, which tend to be secular and pay little attention to spiritual dimensions and divine values. This has caused Islamic educational practices to focus heavily on cognitive aspects and worldly achievements. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the Qur’anic motivational values reflected in the verses of targhib and tarhib, in order to guide educators and students to orient themselves toward seeking Allah’s pleasure while maintaining a balance between hope-driven encouragement (targhib) and cautionary warnings (tarhib). The results show that the concept of targhib and tarhib motivation in the Qur’an, based on Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir Al-Misbah, emphasizes the balance between hope and warning as drivers of righteous deeds. Ibn Kathir interprets motivational verses through a riwayah-based approach, highlighting the tangible rewards of good deeds and the threats against sinful acts. Meanwhile, Quraish Shihab, through Tafsir Al-Misbah, adopts a contextual approach, emphasizing the relevance of Qur’anic motivation in building spiritual and social awareness. The concepts of targhib and tarhib hold a strategic role in shaping the character of educators and students. Targhib fosters enthusiasm for good deeds through promises of reward, paradise, and a good life, while tarhib prevents wrongdoing by warning of punishment and loss. When applied to Islamic education, these concepts can create a work ethic characterized by sincerity, discipline, and responsibility. Furthermore, this research highlights that Qur’anic motivation strengthens the spiritual dimension of education, nurtures moral awareness, and builds a learning culture oriented toward attaining the pleasure of Allah and the ultimate happiness in this world and the Hereafter.
