Abstract

Religious tolerance remains a challenge in various regions in Indonesia, including Yogyakarta, a city of education and a tolerant region that continues to face social dynamics such as denial of religious permits and discrimination against minorities. These problems often arise from differing perspectives within society, fostering exclusionary attitudes. In this context, religious leaders play a crucial role as guardians of social values and moral educators. In the hamlet of Ponggok 2, Trimulyo, Jetis, Bantul, religious leaders respond to religious diversity wisely. This study aims to understand the social actions of religious leaders in strengthening religious tolerance and explore their perspectives on a pluralistic society. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants were three local religious leaders. The analytical tools employed in this study utilize Max Weber's theory of social action and the theory of tolerance, outlined in broad terms. The data analysis techniques employed include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the subjective understanding of religious leaders in strengthening religious tolerance in Ponggok 2 Hamlet is divided into four forms; namely actions to maintain social stability through polite preaching, youth development, and socio-religious forums. Actions influenced by religious values are based on the principle of lakum dinukum waliyadin and the command of amar ma'ruf. Actions based on empathy and a sense of humanity against discrimination. As well as actions rooted in customs and traditions passed down from generation to generation. The variants of the rationality of the social actions of religious leaders when analyzed using Max Weber's theory of social action include instrumental rational, value rational, affective, and traditional actions. In practice, religious leaders such as Hilmi Mustafa are more dominant in using instrumental rational, while Muhammad Husaini and Ishak emphasize value rational, Tarwadi adheres to instrumental rational by utilizing traditional values, and Fajar Gunadi practices instrumental rational through optimizing social facilities. Thus, the socio-religious strategies of religious leaders in Ponggok 2 function to maintain social stability, maintain harmony, and prevent potential religious-based conflicts.
