Abstract

This research discusses the theme of the transformation of the ruwatan ritual for dreadlocked hair in Dieng Wetan Village, Wonosobo Regency. The ruwatan ritual has been practiced since the Hindu period around the 8th century AD and remains preserved by the Dieng community to this day. Originally, the ritual was private, performed within the family circle. However, over time, it has transformed into a large-scale public festival. The main research questions are how the ruwatan ritual has transformed in Dieng Wetan and what factors have driven this change. This study uses a qualitative method with data collection techniques including visual observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using Clifford Geertz’s theory of cultural transformation and George Ritzer’s theory of cultural commodification. This approach aims to understand how a sacred cultural practice shifts its form in response to modern social and economic contexts, particularly with the influence of the tourism sector. The results of this research show that the ruwatan ritual in Dieng Wetan has shifted from a family-based ritual to a public festival packaged for tourism purposes. This transformation has been influenced by the development of local tourism, government interventions, and the community’s economic needs. Although the form of the ritual has changed, the Dieng community strives to preserve traditional elements amid modernization. This study affirms that cultural traditions can transform over time while maintaining the continuity of local cultural identity. Keywords: Transformation, Ruwatan Ritual, Commodification
