Abstract

The background of this research stems from the researcher's interest in the dynamics of the multicultural environment created at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, as well as the diversity of ethnic groups among students, which plays an important role in fostering attitudes of tolerance within the campus environment. This study aims to determine the relationship between the multicultural environment and ethnic diversity towards the tolerance of students in Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This research is a quantitative study conducted at the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Based on Slovin's formula, a sample of 317 students (20.76%) was required from a population of 1,527 students. The sampling technique used is random sampling with the help of Microsoft Excel's Randbetween function based on student serial numbers to determine who would be selected as a sample from each study program and cohort. The independent variable in this study is the multicultural environment (X1), the dependent variable is student tolerance (Y), and the control variable is ethnic diversity (X2). Data collection instruments use questionnaires. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique employs descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, and inferential statistics with the assistance of SPSS 21. The inferential analysis conducted consisted of correlation tests (bivariate and partial) and regression tests (multiple linear regression). The comparison results of the bivariate correlation coefficient between multicultural environment (X1) and ethnic diversity (X2), with the partial correlation coefficient between multicultural environment (X1) and ethnic diversity (X2) as well as student tolerance (Y), showed a coefficient of ryx > ryx.z, namely 0.763 > 0.433. This result is supported by regression analysis, which indicates that the contribution of ethnic diversity (X2) in increasing student tolerance (Y) is greater compared to the multicultural environment (X1). The coefficient of determination (R²) is 0.675, meaning that the variability of student tolerance (Y) can be explained by the variability of the multicultural environment (X1) and ethnic diversity (X2) by 67.5%, while the remaining 32.5% is explained by other variables not examined in this thesis.
