Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of the dowry in the form of a set of prayer tools in marriages in Yogyakarta from the perspective of the marriage officiants. As an essential element in marriage, dowry has legal, social, and religious dimensions. A set of prayer tools is often chosen as a dowry because it is considered symbolic and carries deep meaning, although the public’s understanding of it varies. This study focuses on the views of the marriage officiants regarding the meaning of this dowry and the factors that influence its selection. The method used in this study is qualitative with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews with 13 marriage officiants from various Religious Affairs Offices (KUA) in Yogyakarta. Data analysis was performed using a descriptive approach to explore the views of the marriage officiants on the meaning of the dowry in the form of a set of prayer tools and the factors influencing its selection. This study uses Max Weber's theory of social action, which distinguishes social actions based on rationality, values, tradition, and emotion. In this context, the selection of the dowry in the form of a set of prayer tools can be seen as a social action influenced by various rational, cultural, and religious factors. The results show that the dowry in the form of a set of prayer tools is understood by the officiants as a symbol of sincerity, responsibility, and an invitation to live a religious married life. However, the public’s understanding of this dowry tends to be limited to symbolism without delving into the spiritual values it contains. The factors influencing the selection of this dowry include economic factors, local cultural habits, and the religiosity of the couple. While many choose this dowry for economic reasons and cultural customs, some couples also view it as a form of religious commitment in marriage.
