Abstract
The background of this research is the need for further development of the book "Mengenal Ilmu Balaghah" by Kyai Emuh Muhaemin due to its limitations in the form of dictation and its teaching method, which is restricted to lectures. Another reason is that the contextual approach usually used in teaching is not documented and relies solely on transmission through learning activities. Another challenge to the integrity of learning through the book is that Islamic boarding schools must adapt to the conditions of students who attend school, which affects the allocation of time, teaching methods, and learning targets. The development of previous teaching materials in the form of a textbook with a contrastive adabi approach is considered suitable, even necessary to overcome the problems that form the background of this research. Therefore, this research aims to: 1) Develop the book Mengenal Ilmu Balaghah based on the contrastive adabi approach. 2) Determine the effect of the book development on students' understanding of balaghah at Ponpes Sukahideng. This research falls under the Research and Development (R&D) approach. The development procedure chosen is the ADDIE model. To determine the effectiveness of the developed product, the researcher conducted a quasi-experiment with a onegroup pretest-posttest design. The subjects used in the study were third-level students at Ponpes Sukahideng. Data were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, tests, and documentation. Test data were then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test with the help of IBM SPSS 27. The results of this study are: 1) A textbook product with a contrastive adabi approach named "Edelweis Bayan". This book develops the bayan material from the dictation "Mengenal Ilmu Balaghah". In general, the presentation of this book is by comparing two literary texts from two contrasted languages, namely Indonesian and Arabic, along with images and presentations that encourage literary appreciation. 2) After being tested by material and media experts, with an average total of 91% and 93.56% in the "very feasible" category, the product was then tested. The results show that this research is in accordance with the hypothesis: "The use of the developed Mengenal Ilmu Balaghah textbook based on the contrastive adabi approach affects students' understanding of balaghah and literary appreciation." The hypothesis was found through the Wilcoxon test with a value of 0.000 on the cognitive test and 0.003 on the affective test. Edelweiss bayan increased scores in both aspects, but it was more effective in providing understanding than increasing literary appreciation. The product received very positive responses from teachers and students with an average total of 4.86 for teachers and 4.22 for students out of a total score of 5.
