Abstract

Early adulthood is a crucial phase in an individual's development towards independence, marked by challenges in identity formation, the search for life purpose, and adjustment to social and psychological changes. When raised by a single mother, individuals face significant psychological, economic, and social impacts. This study aims to explore the stress coping strategies used by young adults raised by single mothers. The research method uses a phenomenological qualitative approach involving three informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The results show that the three informants developed different coping strategies, despite coming from similar family backgrounds. These differences were significantly influenced by the quality of single mothering, where supportive and responsive parenting patterns tended to shape more adaptive and integrated coping strategies, while less responsive parenting patterns contributed to the formation of more avoidant coping strategies. These findings indicate that in single-mother families, the quality of maternal care plays a more decisive role in shaping individual coping strategies than the mere absence of a father figure.
