Abstract
The growing wave of conservatism after the reform era has led to rigid, exclusive, and intolerant patterns of religious practice in Indonesia. This situation contrasts with HAMKA's legacy of thought, which emphasizes tawhid as the core of religion that fosters freedom of thought, critical thinking, and inclusive religious practice. For HAMKA, tauhid is not only theological in nature, but also forms the basis of ethics, society, politics, and culture. This study aims to understand HAMKA's ideas on tauhid and explain the contextualization of HAMKA's thoughts on tauhid in relation to the current state of religious diversity. The research method used is qualitative, with the type of research being library research. The data obtained is classified into two categories: primary data and secondary data. The primary data for this research is the original works of Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (HAMKA), including Pelajaran Agama Islam, Tafsir Al-Azhar, Filsafat Ketuhanan, Studi Islam, and Dari Lembah Cita-cita. The secondary data or supporting data for this research are documents from previous works that are related to the theme and object of this research, either directly or indirectly. The data found will be processed through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The theory used in this research is contextual theology by Azyumardi Azra. The results of this study show that: First, the idea of tawhid in HAMKA's thinking is the affirmation of Allah, which is reflected in faith and proven by righteous deeds. It is this integration of faith and righteous deeds that has a real impact on personal, social, and national life. Tawhid becomes a force that frees humans from the shackles of blind imitation, stagnation, submission to worldly power, and all forms of social injustice. This teaching fosters moral courage, upholds the values of equality and freedom, and enlivens the heart and mind to always side with truth and justice. Second, HAMKA's concept of tauhid, which integrates faith and righteous deeds, encourages Muslims to think broadly, dynamically, and openly, preventing religious diversity from becoming rigid and allowing it to be contextualized in today's religious phenomena. This thinking provides a foundation for overcoming the tendency toward religious conservatism that emphasizes exclusivity, formalism, and fragmentation, while also serving as a basis for building tolerance among religious communities.
