Abstract

Naẓar (seeing a prospective spouse) is a process carried out to observe a potential partner before marriage, with the aim of ensuring compatibility between both parties so as to prevent regret after marriage. This study, entitled “Hadith on Naẓar ( نظ ر ) during Engagement (A Study of Ma’ānil Ḥadīṡ)”, aims to analyze the meaning and understanding of hadith related to the practice of naẓar has shifted from direct face to face interaction to online observation through social media. The main focus of this research includes: 1) examining the authenticity and quality of hadith about the recomendation of naẓar during engagement, 2) understanding these hadith using Yusuf al-Qaradhawi’s methodological framework and 3) contextualizing the hadith concerning naẓar in the current social practices of engagement. This study employs a qualitative approach based on library research, utilizing various sources such as classical hadith compilations, books, articles, and related journals. To interpret the hadith, the researcher applies six of the eight analytical steps proposed by Yusuf al-Qaradhawi, which include understanding hadith in light of the Qur’an, collecting thematic hadith, reconciling apparently conflicting narrations, considering the background and context, distinguishing between changing means and fixed objectives, and differentiating between literal and metaphorical expressions. The findings reveal that hadith encouraging naẓar during engagement, narrated by Imam Muslim No. 1.424, is ṣaḥiḥ (authentic) and serves as a valid legal basis (ḥujjah). This hadith not only emphasizes the physical aspect of seeing a prospective spouse but also includes deeper dimensions of understanding, evaluating, and assessing a partner’s suitability both outwardly and inwardly for the benefit of marriage. The message of this hadith remains relevant today, even more so amid globalization and the influence of social media, which has transformed patterns of interaction. Nevertheless, the essential values contained in the practice of naẓar remain unchanged despite the rapid progress of the times.
