Abstract

Living in a correctional institution is not easy for inmates, as they must adapt to an environment full of restrictions that can trigger psychological stress. To cope with such circumstances, resilience becomes a crucial aspect that enables inmates to endure incarceration. One external factor that can enhance resilience is peer support. This study aims to analyze how peer support is formed within the Class IIA Correctional Institution in Yogyakarta and its role in improving the resilience of inmates convicted of sexual violence. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study method and involved three inmates convicted of sexual violence who were at different stages of their sentences, namely newly admitted inmates, those actively participating in rehabilitation activities, and inmates nearing release, as well as several supporting participants, including fellow inmates, family members, and correctional officers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation review, and were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that peer support in the prison environment is formed through daily social interactions, both in shared living spaces and during rehabilitation activities, with forms of support including appraisal support, tangible support, self-esteem support, and belonging support. These forms of support help inmates navigate the stages of resilience from succumbing to survival, recovery, and thriving, while factors such as age, coping strategies, and religiosity also contribute positively to enhancing inmates’ resilience.
