Abstract
College students, as learners, often face various academic pressures. When they also have additional responsibilities as memorizers of the Qur'an, these burdens become even heavier due to the dual demands of fulfilling their academic obligations while maintaining their memorization. This condition creates an interesting psychological dynamic to examine, particularly regarding how they manage stress through coping strategies. Therefore, this study aims to explore in depth the subjective experiences of college students who memorize the Qur'an in using coping strategies to manage the stress they experience. This research used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and involves three informants selected through purposive sampling—active college students who are Qur’an memorizers, whether living in Islamic boarding school or not, and who have been memorizing the Qur’an for at least two years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, then analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results showed that Qur’an-memorizing students face various sources of stress. In responding to stress, they apply problem-focused coping, such as self-adjustment, setting priorities, limiting smartphone use, repeating verses, and utilizing peer support. Emotion-focused coping is carried out through solitude, nature-based recreation, positive reappraisal, seeking social support, listening to music, and sleeping. Meanwhile, religious coping is reflected in their belief in Allah’s help, engagement in worship practices, and interaction with the Qur’an. Additionally, some students use gaming as an emotional regulation tool, although its effectiveness is limited. Overall, the combination of these three coping strategies helps Qur’an-memorizing students manage stress and balance their responsibilities.
