Abstract

Indigenous knowledge of Yogyakarta Batik Tulis is a form of original knowledge that is inherited from generation to generation and developed through the experience of batik making practice from generation to generation. This knowledge not only reflects cultural values, but also contains an empirical understanding of materials, temperatures, working techniques, and the process of solving motives that are indirectly related to scientific concepts. However, the potential of this original knowledge has not been widely utilized in science learning in schools, especially physics. This study aims to identify and examine the relevant forms of indigenous knowledge of Yogyakarta Batik Tulis to be integrated in physics learning on temperature and heat materials. The research uses a qualitative method with a semi-structured interview technique with four Yogyakarta Written Batik artisans who have been pursuing batik for generations. The data was analyzed using NVivo through a thematic coding process and visualized using the project maps feature. The results of the study show that the process of making Yogyakarta Written Batik contains a strong relationship with the concept of STEAM which is relevant to temperature and heat materials. The science aspect is seen in the phenomenon of change in form, heating of night candles, and temperature regulation in the dyeing process. The technological aspect is reflected through the use of batik tools made of conductors and insulators based on their thermal properties. The engineering aspect can be seen from the craftsman's technique in controlling the temperature stability of the candle and the tool so that the canning process runs optimally. The arts aspect appears in the temperature setting to maintain the sharpness of the motif and the quality of the color. Meanwhile, the mathematics aspect appears in simple calculations, patterns, and proportions of motifs. These findings show that indigenous knowledge of Batik Tulis Yogyakarta has great potential to improve physics learning that is contextual, applicative, and close to students' lives. The integration of this original knowledge can also support the strengthening of 21st-century skills and the values of the Pancasila Student Profile, such as creativity and appreciation for the nation's culture.
