Abstract

The Islamic Boarding School Bin Baz Yogyakarta underwent significant expansion after the Reform Era as an institution grounded in Salafi ideology; however, the construction of its ideological network, social relations, and scientific system remains insufficiently studied. Addressing this gap is crucial for understanding how the ideology of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) is constructed and transformed within the pesantren education system, as well as how it influences Islamic education in Indonesia. This study aims to examine the construction and transformation of the PAI ideological network at the Islamic Center Bin Baz Islamic Boarding School; analyze the socio-historical factors shaping it, the networks formed, and the modes of ideological transformation that support its growth and expansion; and explain the institution’s strategic expansion and its influence on Islamic religious education nationally. This research adopts an interpretive descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, documentation, and observations, with key informants selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, encompassing data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. Data validity was tested through source and method triangulation. This study shows that: (1) The Islamic Center Bin Baz Islamic Boarding School was founded by Abu Nida’ Chomsaha Sofwan and has experienced rapid development due to its strong historical foundation, commitment to Salafi ideology, and three strategic roles aligned with national needs: (a) improving national education through a modern pesantren system, (b) cultivating moral and character development through intensive guidance, and (c) contributing to the prevention of radicalism and terrorism through targeted religious education. The synergy of these three roles enables the pesantren to adapt, expand, and gain broad social legitimacy. (2) The construction of the pesantren’s social, academic, and ideological networks is shaped by the central role of its founder, Abu Nida’ Chomsaha Sofwan, whose cross-organizational scholarly sanad spans SD Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama, KH Abdurrahman Syamsuri (Muhammadiyah), M. Natsir (DDII), and Abdul Aziz bin Baz (Saudi Salafism). This network has produced an educational system characterized by structured Salafi principles: ideology as the foundation, the seven khittah as a value framework, a network of central and branch institutions as organizational pillars, and its vision–mission, educational goals, and curriculum as the culmination of its ideological direction. (3) Ideological transformation into Islamic religious education is operationalized through the application of the seven khittah of the At- Turots Al-Islam Council Foundation: strengthening faith, mastery of the Arabic language, noble character (akhlaq karimah), tahfiz al- Qur’an, academic excellence, national insight (wathaniyah), and waṣaṭiyah (moderation). The integration of these values generates a key finding of this study: the “Salafi Waṣaṭi” typology—a model of the Salafi movement that integrates doctrinal purification with nationalism, tolerance, and moderation. This typology underpins the development, expansion, and sustainability of the Bin Baz Islamic Boarding School within the Indonesian context.
