Abstract

The Society 5.0 era presents new moral challenges that require education not only to master digital literacy but also to strengthen moral character. Therefore, a comparative analysis of Thomas Lickona’s and Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s ideas on character education is needed to formulate a humanistic and contextually relevant framework for character formation. This study aims to analyze the concepts of character education proposed by both scholars, identify their similarities and differences, and formulate their implications for education in the Society 5.0 era. This research employs a qualitative approach with a comparative method and content analysis. Data were collected through documentation techniques by gathering and reviewing various documents serving as sources of information for verification, interpretation, and prediction of the studied phenomena. The results show that: (1) Thomas Lickona emphasizes three main pillars of character education moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action while Ki Hadjar Dewantara prioritizes the balance of cipta (thought), rasa (feeling), and karsa (will) within the among system, guiding children according to their natural disposition. (2) Both view character education as the core of shaping civilized individuals, yet differ in their philosophical foundations: Lickona’s framework is grounded in Western humanistic morality, whereas Dewantara’s thought is rooted in Indonesian cultural and spiritual values. (3) The implication of both concepts results in an integrative–conceptual model that combines moral rationality with cultural wisdom. This model is considered relevant for developing digital intelligence, empathy, ethics, and global competitiveness while maintaining human identity. Their values can serve as the foundation for strengthening character education to face the challenges of the Society 5.0 era.
