Abstract

This study emphasizes the importance of managing the Project Based Learning (PjBL) strategy to enhance students’ journal article writing skills, as journal articles are integral to academic literacy and publication requirements in higher education. The study aims to analyze the management of PjBL in improving the journal writing competency of regular (working) students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Asahan, based on Fred R. David’s Strategic Management theory and George Lucas's Project Based Learning stages. A qualitative research approach was employed, with data collected through observation, documentation, and interviews. Data validity was ensured using source triangulation involving nine informants across three levels. Data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, including data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings indicate that: (1) Regular class students (working students) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Asahan possess limited fundamental understanding of journal article writing and minimal research experience; (2) The implementation of Project Based Learning was based on three main reasons: the academic requirement of scholarly publication, the alignment of Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK) with journal articles as the final course product, and the accommodation of the specific conditions of working students through an adaptive learning approach encompassing the stages of formulation, implementation, and evaluation; and (3) This strategy proved effective in improving students’ writing skills and soft skills, resulting in 5 articles 3 of which have been submitted to scientific journals, while two remain in draft form for refinement demonstrating PjBL’s capacity to enhance academic productivity and students’ readiness for publication.
