Abstract

The high prevalence of mental disorders in Indonesia, reaching approximately 20% of the adult population, is a pressing health problem exacerbated by limited access to professional mental health services and social stigma. Specific data in Yogyakarta showed 3,239 cases of mental disorders in 2024. This condition encourages people to seek complementary alternatives, one of which is through a spiritual healing approach rooted in religious and cultural beliefs, such as that implemented at the Pondok Tetirah Zikir Berbah Sleman Rehabilitation Center. Although this practice is common, a deeper understanding of the ritual process, the patient's subjective experience, and the mechanisms contributing to mental recovery still require further study. Therefore, this study aims to analyze in depth the process of spiritual healing rituals applied to mental patients at the Pondok Tetirah Zikir Berbah Sleman Rehabilitation Center, including detailed descriptions of the actions and stages of treatment, explaining its dogma and orientation, and outlining an analysis of the process in achieving comprehensive mental health. Using a qualitative research method with an anthropological-spiritual approach, this study was conducted at the Pondok Tetirah Dzikir Rehabilitation Center in Sleman, Yogyakarta. Informants were selected purposively, including the head of the center, recovered patients/former patients with mental disorders, and volunteers. Data were collected through observation, unstructured interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used an interactive model that included data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions through data triangulation. This study used the framework of Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory and Kenneth I. Pargament's Religious Coping as the basis for analysis. The spiritual healing process at this Islamic boarding school implements an integrated spiritual-medical approach, where religious ritual practices are interspersed with medical therapy in the form of medication. The treatment stages are holistic and systematic, starting with Stabilization and Observation, followed by Symptom Reduction and Intensive Therapy (through dhikr, prayer, and psychotherapy), Maintenance and Partial Reintegration (through vocational therapy and conditional discharge permits), and finally Full Recovery and Aftercare. Treatment measures are divided into cognitive-spiritual (e.g., dhikr, congregational prayer that functions as a mindfulness technique) and non-cognitive (e.g., community service and plantation empowerment for physical stabilization and social restructuring). The treatment dogma is based on Islamic teachings, with an orientation toward restoring spiritual balance and building a supportive environment. In conclusion, the effectiveness of this treatment process lies in the integration of spiritual healing and positive religious coping with cognitive restructuring and restoration of social function, which simultaneously successfully builds the patient's self-efficacy, discovers the transcendent meaning of life, and restores social roles within the community.
