Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Jogja Heritage Track as a medium of cultural literacy in supporting the preservation of the values of the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis by the Department of Culture of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Although this area has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its preservation efforts have thus far focused more on physical and spatial aspects, while the knowledge dimension and cultural values embedded within it have not been fully understood by the wider community. Therefore, this research seeks to answer how the concept and implementation of the Jogja Heritage Track initiated by the Department of Culture of the Special Region of Yogyakarta are carried out, how the program functions as a cultural literacy medium in preserving the philosophical values of the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis, and what challenges are encountered in its implementation. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, while data validity was ensured through source triangulation, methodological triangulation, and member checking. A total of 13 informants participated in this study, including officials of the Department of Culture of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, program guides, and participants of the Jogja Heritage Track. The findings indicate that the Jogja Heritage Track serves as an experience-based medium that integrates philosophical narratives, cultural symbols, and spatial arrangements, thereby enhancing participants’ cultural understanding and awareness. The program does not merely provide information but also internalizes cultural values through direct experience and critical reflection, aligning with UNESCO’s concept of cultural literacy and E.D. Hirsch Jr.’s theory of cultural literacy. However, its implementation still faces structural challenges, such as limited coordination, human resources, and funding, as well as cultural challenges, including varying levels of participants’ cultural literacy and shifting lifestyles among younger generations. This study emphasizes that cultural preservation should not only focus on physical conservation but also on the preservation of knowledge and the dissemination of cultural information, which constitute an essential domain rooted in local wisdom. In conclusion, the Jogja Heritage Track functions as a transformative medium that strengthens cultural identity and community engagement in preserving the philosophical values of the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis.
