Abstract
The tradition of drinking water from the sendang (spring) is a ceremonial procession in the wedding customs of the people of Saradan Hamlet, Terong Village, Dlingo Sub-district, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, which is carried out after the marriage contract (akad nikah). The procession begins with the bride and groom being paraded past an older sendang, followed by drinking water from Sendang Surasetika, and concludes with the symbolic act of dipping their hands into a jar filled with water. For the local community, this tradition is regarded as a means of seeking ancestral blessings, helping the newlyweds adapt quickly to their new environment, and as an effort to attain marital harmony, safety, and the continuity of their lineage. The purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the implementation of the sendang water-drinking tradition after the marriage contract in Saradan Hamlet and to analyze its status from the perspective of Islamic law. This research employs a qualitative method with a field research approach combined with a literature study. Primary data were obtained through interviews with community leaders, religious scholars, customary elders, and couples who have performed the tradition, as well as through direct observation and documentation at the research site. Secondary data were gathered from literature sources such as books, journals, articles, and previous studies. The analytical technique used is descriptive-analytical, based on the theory of ‘urf (custom) and relevant fiqh principles. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that this tradition continues to be preserved because it holds social, spiritual, moral, and educational values. The community believes that through this tradition, newlyweds can more easily integrate into their new environment and strengthen social solidarity, while also serving as a means of transmitting cultural values to younger generations. From the perspective of Islamic law, this tradition is categorized as ‘urf ṣaḥīḥ (valid custom) because it does not contradict any shar‘i texts, does not contain elements of polytheism (shirk), and is not made a condition or pillar of a valid marriage. Therefore, the tradition of drinking water from the sendang can be accepted as a form of local wisdom that aligns with Islamic teachings and serves as a cultural identity of the Saradan Hamlet community.
