Abstract

Family resilience is a crucial aspect in maintaining social stability, especially for underprivileged communities that are vulnerable to economic and social pressures. In Bayan District, North Lombok, around 30% of families are classified as underprivileged, facing challenges of fluctuating income and limited resources, which have the potential to threaten the integrity of the household. This study stems from the interesting phenomenon that many families in Bayan are able to maintain harmony and household continuity despite difficult financial conditions. A significant research gap lies in the lack of studies that holistically integrate interpersonal communication theory, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and Islamic reciprocity values (Qiro'ah Mubadalah) in the context of communities with rich local culture and spirituality. This study uses an in-depth descriptive-analytical qualitative design. A total of 20 underprivileged families, 10 traditional/religious leaders, and paralegals in Bayan District, North Lombok, participated in the study. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and participatory observation, supported by secondary data analysis. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, focusing on reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The theoretical framework used includes Joseph A. DeVito's Interpersonal Communication Theory to understand interactions and support among family members, Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory to analyze the fulfillment of basic needs to self-actualization, and Faqihudin Abdul Kodir's Qiro'ah Mubadalah concept to reveal the principles of reciprocity, justice, and balance in family relationships. The integration of these three theoretical frameworks is expected to provide a comprehensive and multidimensional understanding of the resilience of underpriv The results of the study reveal that the resilience of underprivileged families in Bayan is not solely determined by economic factors, but rather is the result of synergy between internal strengths and external support. Crucial internal factors include effective interpersonal communication (openness, empathy, emotional support, optimism, mutual respect), adaptive abilities in meeting hierarchical needs (from physiological to collective self-actualization), and the application of the Qiro'ah Mubadalah principle in husband-wife and family relationships. Significant external factors are strong community social networks (material, labor, and emotional support), the central role of traditional and religious leaders in mediation and moral guidance, and the contribution of government programs as a safety net. Key findings show that effective communication and the principle of reciprocity are the main pillars in managing limitations, while spirituality and optimism are invaluable sources of psychological strength.
