Abstract

This study examines the representation of the West in the anthology of short stories Sayyidah fi> Khidmatik by Ihsan 'Abd al-Quddus, by highlighting how the East faces Western superiority through Hasan Hanafi's perspective of occidentalism. Travel literature in this work is used to shape the image of the West while representing the East as an entity that maintains local traditions and human values. This research uses listening, historical, and comparative methods, with Carl Thompson's travel literature theory and Hasan Hanafi's occidentalism approach that emphasizes al-turās wa at-tajdid. The results show that the author represents the West as an Other that is often considered superior, while the East appears as a subject that focuses on religiosity and humanity. The journeys in these short stories are categorized as exploratory journeys that reflect the reality of Eastern societies with two different attitudes: maintaining old traditions (as}-S}ilah al-It}t}is}a>l ) or breaking with them (al-ṣilah al-inqiṭā). In conclusion, the author emphasizes the importance of recognizing the shortcomings and strengths of each side to achieve equal representation between the East and the West
