Abstract
Marriage in Islam is understood as an institution that aims to bring peace and love, as stated in QS. Ar-Rum (30): 21. The concept of sakinah serves as an ideal value that guides the creation of harmonious relationships in Muslim families. However, social reality shows that the meaning of sakinah is not static, but is subject to negotiation in line with social and digital cultural changes. The millennial generation, as a generation living in the midst of modernity and technology, has undergone a transformation in values in terms of the meaning of marriage, including in the context of rural areas that have also been affected by globalization. The village of Sobokerto in Ngemplak District, Boyolali Regency, is a village in a peri-urban area that represents the meeting point between communal traditions and the demands of modernity. This condition raises questions about how sakinah is understood and implemented by millennials in their marriages. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive-analytical field research design using a phenomenological approach. Data were obtained through in-depth individual interviews with 10 informants (5 married couples) from the Millennial generation in Sobokerto Village, as well as non-participatory observation and literature study. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model, which includes reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The theory used is Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's social construction theory to analyze the processes of externalization, objectification, and internalization in the formation of the meaning of sakinah as a negotiated social reality. To deepen the analysis, this study also draws on Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism to examine how economic rationality and work ethic influence the construction of sakinah, as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus to explain how social experiences and rural life structures shape the dispositions underlying millennial marital practices. Both perspectives are positioned as supplementary analytical lenses that enrich the empirical analysis without replacing social construction theory as the primary analytical framework. The results show that sakinah for the Millennial generation in Sobokerto Village is understood as a state of tranquility that arises from economic stability and emotional balance. This meaning is formed through the dialectic of life experiences, economic demands, and the penetration of digital culture. The implementation of sakinah is manifested through egalitarian relationship patterns, flexibility in the division of domestic roles, dialogical communication, and increased female agency in decision-making. Thus, sakinah in the perspective of the rural millennial generation is not merely a normative legacy, but rather the result of a social construction that is adaptive and contextual to the changing times without abandoning religious values as its foundation.
