Abstract

The limited number of qari and qariah in Yogyakarta encourages students to study the art of reading the Qur'an, one of which is at the Bahrul Qur'an Islamic Boarding School in Yogyakarta. This boarding school is the only Islamic boarding school that has a tilawah education curriculum. On the other hand, this institution has developed into a social arena in the transformation of social status in the surrounding environment, for those who have mastered the art of tilawah. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The data analysis is used to examine the strategies students use to accumulate capital and the social structure of the pesantren. The theory used in this study is Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social practice, with three main concepts, namely habitus, capital, and field. The results of the study show that shifts in students' social status occur through the mechanisms of capital accumulation and conversion. This process begins with the formation of a religious habitus through academic discipline and the internalization of pesantren norms. Students who successfully accumulate cultural and social capital become symbolic capital in the form of recognition, honor, and authoritative legitimacy. Conversely, students who fail to adapt to the pesantren habitus tend to experience stagnation and do not achieve significant status shifts. Thus, tilawah training functions as an arena for symbolic competition that determines the social stratification of its actors.
