Abstract

Indonesian society is still rife with ableism, which positions people with disabilities as second-class citizens. Children with disabilities are considered superfluous—excess humans who can be discarded. This situation gives rise to social exclusion and a lack of recognition in the public sphere. This concern motivated Sri Setyaningsih to establish the Kresna Patra Disability Foundation by facilitating practical work placements in Boyolali Regency since 2017. These internships have become a real arena for natality where people with disabilities have realized their authentic existence as empowered and dignified individuals. Based on this background, the purpose of this study is to explore the awareness of the existence of people with disabilities in increasing the capacity of inclusive labor in Boyolali Regency. This includes the recruitment of internship participants with all its challenges, which included rejection from their families. Data sources include unstructured interviews analyzing life experiences marked by social stigma until adulthood, achieving success as local hero at the international Zero Project Award 2025 in Vienna, Austria. This study analyzes Hannah Arendt's existential phenomenology of natality as a key to understanding the consciousness of disabled people. The author uses a purposive sampling approach with unstructured interviews when disabled people undergo work placements from 2017 to July 2025. The author also became an insider, observing how the stigma attached to disability during childhood, cultural challenges during adolescence, and adulthood enabled the implementation of inclusive internships for 500 people with disabilities in Central Java Province. The results of this study show that authentic awareness of the existence of people with disabilities can develop an existential experience of natality through new actions, creating a ‘second birth’ at the Kresna Patra Foundation in Boyolali Regency. More deeply, this foundation is able to achieve authentic awareness of natality so that children with disabilities gain access to capacity building as empowered and independent individuals. This is in line with the extent to which the foundation can mobilize people with physical, motor, or intellectual disabilities to network with non-disabled groups. This research shows that the foundation has collaborated with various sectors through partnerships with the CSR programs of PT Pertamina and PT Pan Brothers Tbk over the past seven years.
