Abstract

The waste problem in Indonesia remains a pressing environmental issue, with the generation reaching 36.2 million tons/year in 2022 and mostly coming from food waste and household plastic. Low public awareness and limited management make waste management efforts less than optimal. Waste banks as an innovation based on the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), not only contribute to waste reduction, but also to the socio-economic empowerment of the community. In RT 4 Sambirejo, Karanganyar Wedomartani Village, Ngemplak, Sleman, youth involvement is an example of a positive initiative in waste bank management, in line with the strategic role of the younger generation as agents of change in realizing sustainable environmental management. This study aims to describe the waste bank management system implemented by youth in RT 4 Sambirejo, Karanganyar Wedomartani Village, Ngemplak, Sleman and identify supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach to examine the management of a youth-empowerment-based waste bank in RT 4 Sambirejo, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, with 14 respondents selected using purposive sampling, consisting of administrators and community members. Data validity was tested through triangulation of sources and techniques, while analysis was conducted through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that the involvement of youth functions not only as technical implementers but also as agents of change who foster collective community awareness about the importance of waste management. Through the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the youth strengthen social networks, enhance leadership skills, and encourage active citizen participation through simple yet structured managerial functions and environmental education activities. Supporting factors include moral support from community leaders, youth enthusiasm, adequate basic facilities, and the growing environmental awareness of some residents. Inhibiting factors include limited financial assistance, inadequate transportation facilities, fluctuating prices of inorganic waste, and the lack of full community participation. The creativity and collective spirit of the youth serve as the main driving force for the sustainability of the waste bank program in the area.
