Abstract
The phenomenon of commuter marriage has become a form of family adaptation increasingly encountered in large cities, including the City of Yogyakarta, particularly when job demands require husbands to work outside their home regions. Living apart generates psychological and social dynamics that affect couples’ daily lives therefore, this study aims to answer the question of how the psychosocial well-being of commuter-married couples in the City of Yogyakarta is maintained. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach involving four couples as informants, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed using Ryff’s framework of psychological well-being and Keyes’ framework of social well-being. The findings indicate that the principal reason for adopting commuter marriage is husband’s job placement, while wives and children remain in the City of Yogyakarta due to perceived comfort and extended family support. The couples’ psychosocial well-being is generally good and stable that is, not at a low level but not uniformly at the highest level and can therefore be categorized as moderate. Psychological dimensions such as self-acceptance, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and personal growth tend to be strong, reflecting adequate adaptive capacity. However, economic burden, fatigue, and double responsibilities cause several aspects of social well-being to fall into moderate and weak levels. Intensive communication, mutual trust, and social support from family emerge as key factors in maintaining well-being, while spiritual values constitute an important source of resilience. These findings offer a comprehensive portrait of psychosocial well-being among commuter-married couples in the City of Yogyakarta.
