Abstract
This study examines the relationship between Islam and changes in the Boli tradition in the Batak Angkola indigenous community during the period 1980-2023. The Boli tradition, which is a form of dowry in the marriage of the Batak Angkola community, underwent a significant transformation along with modernization, globalization, and the influence of Islam. During this period, the Batak Angkola community has faced various social, economic and cultural changes, which have affected the implementation and meaning of the Boli tradition. This research focuses on 1) knowing the social conditions of the Angkola Batak community in the period 1980-2023; 2) exploring the development of the Boli tradition in marriage in the Angkola Batak indigenous community; and 3) analyzing the reasons Islam played a role in changing the Boli tradition in the marriage of the Angkola Batak indigenous community. This research method uses a qualitative approach by adopting the historical method which includes four main stages. Heuristics were conducted through data collection from primary sources such as archives and interviews with traditional leaders and cultural figures of Batak Angkola, as well as secondary sources in the form of books, theses, and scientific papers from various libraries and related websites. Verification is done to test the credibility of data through external and internal criticism, ensuring the authenticity of information obtained from written and verbal sources. Interpretation is done by analyzing historical facts using relevant theories and approaches, compiling information chronologically to understand changes in the Boli tradition in the context of Islamization. Historiography compiles research results in a systematic and chronological format, dividing the research report into several chapters to present findings and conclusions in a structured manner. The results of this research show that: 1) During the period 1980-2023, the Angkola Batak community experienced significant social changes due to modernization and globalization. The Boli tradition in marriage remains an important part of their cultural identity, although it undergoes adaptation to suit economic, educational and infrastructural developments. 2) The Boli tradition in Angkola Batak marriages has evolved from traditional fundraising such as martahi marpege-pege to the use of modern technology, while still maintaining strong social and economic values. This change reflects the community's ability to maintain cultural authenticity while adapting to the demands of the times. 3) Islam has had a significant influence on changes in Boli traditions, including in the concept of dowry and marriage procedures. Although Islamic values influence the implementation of Boli, the Batak Angkola community continues to maintain traditional elements such as martahi marpege-pege, showing the integration between custom and Islam.
