Abstract

The diversity of languages in Indonesia is a distinctive feature of each culture in Indonesia. Not only the language used, but also accents, dialects, tones of voice, and tempo can be distinctive features of a region in Indonesia. With these cultural differences, it is necessary to make adjustments in communication so as not to cause communication failures resulting from cultural differences and misunderstandings of the meaning that has been conveyed. This study aims to show the adaptation process of students from Flores in facing stereotypes while studying in Yogyakarta.This study uses a qualitative descriptive research design and a phenomenological approach with five students from Flores who are currently studying in Yogyakarta as samples. Data were collected through interviews. The unit of analysis in this study is the adaptation process in facing stereotypes. The data collection technique used includes in-depth interviews conducted as simply as possible. From the data obtained, the researcher collected information from several respondents, described and categorized it, and identified specific similarities and differences in their perspectives.The results of the study show that the adaptation process of Flores students follows four phases in accordance with Young Yun Kim's intercultural adaptation theory: the honeymoon phase, frustration, readjustment, and resolution. In the initial phase, they were enthusiastic about the new environment, but then faced challenges.
