Abstract

The forces of globalization and exposure to digital media have generated diverse Islamic discourses that potentially influence the formation of students’ religious identities, including tendencies toward exclusive and radical interpretations. This condition requires pesantren to go beyond merely transmitting religious knowledge and to consciously construct a moderate Muslim identity through a well-structured educational system. Pesanten Persatuan Islam (Persis) Tarogong, with its reformist ideological orientation emphasizing the purification of Islamic teachings while simultabeously providing formal Madrasah Aliyah education, constitutes a relevant dialectical space, as it stands at the intersection between ideological steadfastness and the demand for shaping a moderate religious identity among students within a plural social context. This setting allows for an examinaton of the process through which students’ religious identities are constructed through educational media. This study aims to explore the role of educational media in shaping moderate Muslim identity among Madrasah Aliyah students at Pesantren Persis tarogong, to identify the dtrategies employed in this identity formation process, and to analyze the supporting and inhibiting factors amid the dynamics of digital information. The study is grounded in Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmaan’s Social Construction Theory to examine how values of Islamic moderation are constructed, disseminated and internalized through educational media. This research adopts a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis of educational media, including textbooks, learning modules, and instructional documents. The research subjects consisted of Madrasah Aliyah students, teachers, and pesantren administrators at Pesantren Persis Tarogong. Data analysis was conducted through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and veification. The findings of this study indicate that educational media at Persantren Persis Tarogong play a significant role in constructing the moderate Muslim identity of students through the integration of Islamic moderation values and the pesantren’s core values (Panca Arta) into teaching materials and the learning process. The process of identity construction occurs through the stages of externalization, objectivation, and internalization, with educational media functioning as the primary channel for transmitting moderation values. The impacts are reflected in students’ perspectives on diversity, their rational way of thinking, their attitudes toward radicalism characterized by avoiding fanatical attachment to any particular group, and their critical stance toward media content. Identity formation strategies are implemented through curriculum strengthening, dialogical learning approaches, teachers’ role modelling, and the habituation of values in daily pesantren life.
