Abstract
Juvenile delinquency in Indonesia shows an increasing trend and in Ponorogo Regency appears in various forms such as free sex, alcohol abuse, online gambling, smoking, skipping school, to other deviant behaviors related to marriage dispensation applications due to out-of-wedlock pregnancies. This study seeks to understand adolescent delinquency not only from external factors (family, economy, environment, peers), but especially from the dynamics of adolescents' internal motivation by using Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory (SDT) which emphasizes the fulfillment of basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. This study uses a phenomenological qualitative approach with purposive sampling techniques on nine adolescent delinquency perpetrators in Ponorogo Regency, with data collection through in-depth interviews supported by observation and documentation and analyzed through the organization of meaning units, meaning transformation, and the preparation of thematic structures. The argument of this research is that there is a dynamic of resilience in selfdetermination in juvenile delinquency cases. The results showed that the fulfillment of the needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness was related to the emergence of adolescent resilience, while frustration with these three needs was related to an increased risk of juvenile delinquency. Adolescents who received support for autonomy, experiences of success, and warm relationships with parents, teachers, and friends showed self-efficacy, as well as more autonomous regulation of motivation and tended to avoid delinquency thus encouraging the choice of value-rational and instrumental rational types of actions, while adolescents who lived in excessive control, repeated experiences of failure, and cold or conflicting family relationships tended to have low self-efficacy. Motivation is controlled so that it encourages adolescents to choose traditional and affective type actions. So that seeking recognition and a sense of connection through peer groups is risky, for example through smoking, drunkenness, skipping school, and gambling. This study concludes that juvenile delinquency in Ponorogo can be understood as an expression of frustration of basic psychological needs and proposes strengthening autonomy support, competency development, and restoration of the quality of connectedness in families, schools, and communities as alternative strategies for prevention and intervention of juvenile delinquency.
