Abstract
This study aims to analyze the Sonobudoyo Museum Library as a medium for preserving Javanese culture through the application of the Four Cultural Heritage Domains theory, grounded in the challenges posed by globalization and the declining interest of younger generations amid the dominance of digital culture. Museum libraries as repositories of cultural heritage have not been optimally utilized, while academic studies employing the Four Cultural Heritage Domains approach remain limited. These conditions form the basis for conducting this research at the Sonobudoyo Museum Library. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study design, using observation, documentation, and interviews as data collection techniques. The data were obtained from six informants selected based on their direct involvement in preservation activities and the utilization of library services. The findings indicate that: (1) the application of the Four Cultural Heritage Domains theory is manifested through (a) the tangible domain, implemented via the conservation of manuscripts, archives, and rare books; (b) the intangible domain, reflected in language, values, traditions, and the provision of Javanese script literacy programs; (c) the natural domain, evident in ecological values related to organic materials and environmental control; and (d) the digital domain, developed through collection digitization and online catalogs. (2) The challenges faced by the Sonobudoyo Museum Library include limited conservation facilities, a lack of restoration experts, low literacy in Javanese script, the vulnerability of organic materials, and suboptimal digital infrastructure, all of which affect the quality of preservation. Based on these findings, this study concludes that the application of the Four Cultural Heritage Domains theory at the Sonobudoyo Museum Library as a medium for preserving Javanese culture has been implemented; however, its success is highly dependent on the availability of resources, facilities, and technological readiness. This study recommends strengthening librarian capacity, accelerating digitization efforts, and developing cultural literacy programs. Future research is encouraged to conduct in-depth evaluations of the effectiveness of cultural literacy programs and to examine technical standards for collection conservation to support more comprehensive preservation efforts.
